The House at Willoughby is a passive solar, mid-century modern home designed and built by my dad in 1970. Dad has always been a nature lover, and he wanted a home that let us see nature as much as possible from anywhere inside. Virtually the entire front of this south-facing home is comprised of tall panes of glass that overlook the field, forest, Mount Wheeler, and Lake Willoughby. On a really cold but sunny day, all it takes to heat most of the house is to open up the quilted curtains.
The feeling of being inside the house is very peaceful. It's like you're out in an open field, surrounded by lush greenery. You almost forget sometimes that there is a roof over your head. Sleeping in the upstairs bedrooms is a lovely experience, especially on starry nights when - lying back on your pillow - you can fall asleep gazing at the Milky Way. When there's a full moon, it can be so bright that you'll be tempted to roll down the window quilts for shade.
The spacious deck is a great spot for hanging out with friends or family. Or you can venture out into the field and enjoy a bonfire by the stone fire pit. In the summer, the spacious lawn is ideal for parties. In the winter, you can relax in the living room and put your feet up by the stove.
