Retreat, Spectacular Views over Lake Caspian
View of Lake Caspian & Greensboro village
Gray Eyrie
SEPTEMBER DISCOUNTED RENTAL ($1,000/WEEK, OR $500/THREE DAY WEEKEND)
This 2,700 sq. ft. structure, known as "Gray Eyrie" (photo #2 above), is a locus of action in Wallace Stegner’s “Crossing to Safety.” Built as their dream house by the friends Stegner describes, a retired professor & wife, it sits atop Greensboro's Baker Hill with a 180-degree view (photo #2) over the village and 700-acre Lake Caspian, one of Vermont's most pristine lakes. The 80-acre property adjoins The Nature Conservancy's 254-acre Barr Hill Preserve, offering picnic sites & hiking trails, with views over Vermont's Green Mountains & New Hampshire's White Mountains.
A separate guesthouse (photo #5) with 2 bedrooms, sleeping four, is available at $650/week. A dock on the lake, 0.6 mile down Baker Hill, offers the house & guesthouse two canoes & private access to swimming, boating and fishing. September is less crowded but still warm enough for water activity.
Greensboro village has several dairy farms as well as fields and forests conserved by The Nature Conservancy & local land trusts. Two miles away is a richly stocked general store, The Willey's Store. The Mountain View Country Club offers tennis & golf that non-members can access for daily fees. There are two nearby gourmet restaurants.
